DSS Observes NYPD CPTED Basic Training Program

Recently, DSS Area Vice President—Business Development & Quality Assurance Jason Choi attended a crime prevention training event at the City of New York Police Department’s (NYPD’s) Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureau.

The Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) training was conducted by the National Institute of Crime Prevention (NICP). CPTED is a strategy that leverages collaboration with community stakeholders and law enforcement to evaluate the physical layouts of parks, schools, businesses, and neighborhoods in order to develop methods to lower crime and improve the quality of life.

During the multi-day event, attendees were taught to integrate design elements such as natural surveillance, natural access control, territorial reinforcement, and social management into security programs to help create safer environments.

21 NYPD personnel, mostly lieutenants and detectives drawn from the NYPD's counterterrorism unit across all city boroughs, participated in the event.

Completing the NICP’s basic CPTED course requires 40 hours of training.

Jason attended the training as a private sector liaison along with a Director of Security from a leading regional property management firm. The private sector liaisons were invited to attend through NYPD SHIELD, the NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau’s partnership with leading private organizations, security professionals, and other law enforcement agencies. DSS has a long-time partnership with NYPD SHIELD.

Having completed all 64 hours of CPTED training, Jason holds CPTED Professional Designation (CPD) from the NICP.

DSS congratulates the NYPD personnel on successfully completing the Basic CPTED Course and we thank NYPD SHIELD for including DSS in the training.
